by Gray Cook
with Lee Burton, Kyle Kiesel, Greg Rose & Milo Bryant

Gray’s premise is beautiful in its simplicity: Training movement can fix muscles, but training muscles rarely fixes movement. Since all of sport is movement, his 80/20 approach is then astounding in its effectiveness. For the time invested, the FMS and its cousins are the best tools I’ve seen for producing bullet-proof athletes and pain-free non-athletes in record time. Tim Ferriss, author of the #1 NY Times bestseller, The 4-Hour Workweek

Movement, the book, is a vivid discovery, a fundamental and explicit teaching in which the return to basics takes on a whole new meaning. In it, author Gray Cook crosses the lines between rehabilitation, conditioning and fitness, providing a clear model and a common language under which fitness and rehabilitation professionals can work together.

Exercise and rehabilitation time is valuable—too valuable not to use a system. Preparation is built on a systematic evaluation of everything we can control. This book uses a systematic approach to exercise and rehabilitation built on the fundamentals of authentic human movement. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts

By using systematic logic and revisiting the natural developmental principals all infants employ as they learn to walk, run and climb, Gray forces a new look at motor learning, corrective exercise and modern conditioning practices.

The discoveries, lessons and approaches you’ll learn—

How to view and measure movement quality alongside quantity

How to ascertain dysfunctional patterns with the FMS

What clinicians need to know about the SFMA

When to apply corrective strategies

How to determine which strategies to use

How to map movement patterns and understand movement as a behavior

We have integrated many of Gray’s movement principles and corrective strategies into our programs to help accomplish our mission of preserving and maintaining the Commander’s combat power. The FMS screening and assessment tools are very useful in establishing the baseline for our performance training system. Mike Strock, US NAVY, Human Performance Consultant

This book is not simply about the anatomy of moving structures. Rather, it serves a broader purpose to help the reader understand authentic human movement, and how the brain and body create and learn movement patterns. Our modern dysfunctions are a product of our isolated and incomplete approaches to exercise imposed on our sedentary lifestyles. A return to movement principles can create a more comprehensive exercise and rehabilitation model, a model that starts with movement.

I was skeptical when Gray and Lee first took me through the screening process. But by bringing out my weak spots, this honest evaluation told them exactly what I needed to work on. They taught me to think of my body in a different way, proving trainers and therapists don’t need fancy equipment to do a good evaluation. Michelle Wie, Professional Golfer

In the seven years since the publication of his first book, Functional Training for Sports, new understanding of functional anatomy created a shift in strength coaching. With this new material, Coach Boyle presents the continued evolution of functional training as seen by a leader in the strength and conditioning field.

After an introduction into his new thinking, Michael uses ten basic sections to present everything a strength coach or personal trainer needs to understand modern training theory, beginning with his joint-by-joint approach to training, along with details of his use of Gray Cook and Lee Burton’s Functional Movement Screen. Next he discusses injury avoidance, treatment, rehab and training after injury. Then he updates the reader on the current thinking in core training, back pain, and on how the hip musculature works, and how it fails. We learn his philosophy on cardiovascular training, and see what has worked for the athletes training in his facility.

In the second half of the book, Michael shifts to training strategies, including which exercises he uses today and which he’s discarded, what equipment and tools are in use on his gym floor, how he develops speed, and, of course, there’s a large section on his now-famous single-leg training.

Finally, we get to program design, where he puts the entire package together to mesh theory with daily reality. He’ll teach you the basic objectives of a sound program, and then over the course of 32 pages, he’ll show you exactly which programs he uses in a variety of client and athletic circumstances.

The category sections include:

Mobility and Flexibility

Injuries

The Core

The Hips

Cardiovascular Training

Developing Athleticism

Equipment Choices

Exercise Choices — The Basics and Single-Leg Training

Program Design

Sample Programs

Introduction by Pavel Tsatsouline; Foreword by Dave Draper

Dan John’s deceptively simple training plans cover a great many fitness attributes, safely and quickly, and are always a hit with athletes. When it comes to teaching strength, Dan John has no superiors and only a handful of equals. ~ Pavel Tsatsouline, author of Enter the Kettlebell

How to get stronger, faster and leaner

Simple steps to great conditioning

What it takes to compete at high-level athletics

Dan John’s top training tips

Effective workouts to carry you through your training seasons

You’ll be…

Motivated beyond belief! It’s that simple. Dan’s teaching and his coaching is unique and tremendously educational, but what will touch you the most is how fired up you’ll be at the end of each chapter. Read a section before you head for the gym — your training will be transformed; on those days when you’re dragging, his words will make the difference between a victory at the gym and a trip to the couch!

After listening to Dan John lecture or reading his work, I envy his athletes not only for the good fortune of receiving his coaching expertise, but also for the lessons that will carry them along through life. Dan is a common man, but an uncommon motivator. ~ Dave Tate, CEO elitefts.com

In Never Let Go, Coach Dan John breaks down the most complicated concepts of strength training and high-performance athletics in a no-nonsense, yet clever and motivating manner. Workout routines, Olympic lifting guidance, Highland Games, track and field and Strongman events are all covered, in addition to weight training philosophy for the general public.

Coach Dan John is one of the premier instructors in the world of movement, strength and athleticism. His lectures on athletic training have revolutionized the thinking of thousands, and his new text, Never Let Go, will set the standard in safer, smarter, more productive training methods. ~ Dr. Mark Cheng, L.Ac., Ph.D., RKC Team Leader, Contributing Editor – Black Belt Magazine

A trip through the most unforgettable years of bodybuilding as a handful of restless musclemen catapulted the sport of muscle and might across the globe.

That says it, but it doesn’t say it all… not for those who love that Golden Era and daydream about it. Dick’s columns and feature stories tell the tales; Artie, Russ, Jimmy, Gene and others provide the memorable black and white photographs, and Dave describes it all through his thoughtful captions.

Now a chiropractor in Northern California, Dick Tyler was a journalist during the most popular area of bodybuilding. This book is an on-the-scenes record of those days, a time before and after the arrival of Arnold to the shores of the USA and the sands of Santa Monica. It’s a sweet look at a special time, and is packed with photos of those golden days of early bodybuilding.

This book covers the bodybuilding scene of Southern California from the period of 1965-1971 — the Dungeon, Peanuts’ Westside Barbell Club garage gym, Vince’s Hollywood gym, the original Gold’s Gym, Zuvers, and of course, photo sessions on the beach, in the mountains and in the gyms throughout the area.

Writes Frank Zane: Recently I got a box containing Dick’s book. It spoke the stuff that inspired me to move to California. Teaching school in Pennsylvania and New Jersey 1964-1966, I read Dick Tyler’s articles in Muscle & Fitness every month. While my body was freezing in the Northeast, my heart was basking in California’s warm sunshine. I met Dave, Larry Scott, Bill McArdle, Don Howorth, Chet Yorton — all the West Coast guys at the Mr. America. West Coast Bodybuilding Scene, Draper’s book of writings by Dick Tyler from Muscle Builder magazine 1965-1971 is nostalgic & sensational.”

Brother Iron, Sister Steel is a private journey into bodybuilding as only Dave can tell it. Training techniques, exercise descriptions and nutritional strategies form the book’s foundation, but what glues this book together are his personal experiences and insights, humor and candidness, all of which speak to the heart and soul. The delight in the iron work, the play of the steel and the redefined motivation will have you striving forward to reach your fitness and training goals.

In this book, Dave writes of training techniques, exercise descriptions and nutritional strategies, but it’s his personal experiences and insights, humor and candidness that speak to the heart of the reader. Clarity, directness and simplicity are found in his unusual training approach; powerful and provocative in the writing, this is a weight training guidebook for all ages.

Further your iron journey — or take your first steps — as you find yourself caught up in the style and rhythm that are Dave’s alone. You’ll see the lessons of Brother Iron, Sister Steel hit home as your training enthusiasm abounds. In your next match with the weights you’ll see the work of your muscles with new clarity under the guidance of his insight.

Dave writes: Brother Iron, Sister Steel is a saga about you and me, lifting weights and building muscle. The plot is as simple as ABC and 1-2-3, although I never found anything particularly simple about the alphabet or mathematics. To contribute to the book’s simplicity I offer in less than a hundred words an outline of the subject matter contained and its sequence. It goes like this:

1 — The Soap Opera
2 — Keys and Guideposts
3 — Train with Style
4 — Mighty Warriors
5 — Push that Iron
6 — Lift that Steel
7 — Exercise X-rays
8 — Nutrition Rules
9 — Overcoming
10 — Memories are the Stuff
11 — Rare Old Magazine Covers
12 — Stoking the Training Fire

About this book, Dave comments:
The 15 years behind the counter and on the floor of my gym in California have signaled to me that everyone must exercise and eat right if he or she hopes to live a sound and fulfilling life. Too few do and far too many lives are in a shambles because of it. As conscientious gym owner, I am in a prime position to help the ailing, negligent and uneducated masses. And, certainly others and I do.

Brother Iron, Sister Steel was written to engage that edge of the population who dare to walk in the gym only to walk out because purpose and desire were missed. It was written as well for the tentative trainee who wanders the floor with desire, yet remain is without a clue. The intermediates who love the pump and burn and want to dig in deeper will, undoubtedly, identify with the facts, tales, fascinations and frustrations of muscle building as visited by an old time… still and always one of the boys. The young and the hardcore… about them I cannot be sure, only that in the years to come, should they endure, they will appreciate the content and philosophy and, perhaps, wish they had referenced it sooner.

Are you confused and have a question about your training? If there is an answer, chances are the answer is here. Be strong. ~Dave Draper

Now in its sixth printing, this book is 336 pages, 6×9 paperback, 80 captioned photos, indexed, 17-page resource appendix

Each chapter is a trip of its own. And throughout the book what I call blasts, bombardments of info, energy, caution and reprimand, are periodically inserted to affirm your purpose, aright your direction and challenge your performance. There is no theme, the articles follow no order. They can be ingested randomly when the spirit moves you, like a shot of wonder protein before a workout. Sip or slug, I hope they satisfy and you never grow full.”

This is the chiropractic text written by Dick Tyler, author of West Coast Bodybuilding Scene. It’s a medical reference for chiropractic doctors interested in expanding their practices beyond basic adjustments; it’s a manual covering therapeutic techniques less often used by general chiropractic practitioners.

Alternative Chiropractic covers the many diversified diagnostic and therapeutic procedures needed to form comprehensive treatment protocols. Dr. Tyler explores many characteristics of alternative therapeutics available to those doctors who wish to offer their patients protocols that follow natural forms of support and treatment.

Dick has a practice in Rocklin, California, and has been practicing for over 35 years. He was Arnold’s first chiropractor, Arnold was Dick’s first patient, and it was Dick who was instrumental in Franco’s entrance into the chiropractic field.

Dr. Tyler served as the editor of The Chiropractic Association, and as the associate editor for the news publication Dynamic Chiropractic. Numerous Tyler-authored papers have been published in professional journals; he’s been a contributor to The Osteopathic Physician, and has lectured on diversified diagnostic procedures, nutrition, homeopathy, herbal medicine and various alternative treatment modalities.

Dick is presently a member of the California Chiropractic Association and currently serves on the California Chiropractic licensing board, appointed by his former patient, now the Governor of California.

Dr. Murray R. Susser, former president of the American Academy of Medical Preventics writes, “I encourage all of you to read this book, and profit by it.”

Notes Dr. A. Earl Homewood, former president of the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, “It is hoped that colleges will use this material to produce real primary care physicians.”

Topics covered include:

This is a valuable text to chiropractors interesting in expanding your practices. Dick feels the chiropractic profession is at a crossroad. He hopes this text will contribute to the decision making each D.C. must make when that time comes.

With over 300 pages, this text contains more than 50 chapters with many illustrations, appendices, a comprehensive bibliography and is fully indexed. This book is an essential addition to the libraries of those health professionals who want to give the public proven alternatives to needless drugs and surgery.

“We are primary care providers. This means we must be the best diagnosticians we can, and should not demure from exercising our therapeutic judgment in all manner of human pathological conditions. We are the products of a sophisticated educational process. We should use what we have learned to its fullest potential. To do more is to deal in excess, but to do less is a disservice to those we seek to serve. I hope this volume extends this perspective.” Dr. Richard H. Tyler, 2005
