Dave Whitley: Lessons of the Old-Time Strongmen
Very few people understand the work of the old-time strongmen, and fewer yet can accomplish any of their feats. Dave Whitley is one such person, and in this live workshop DVD he’ll show you how some of the strength feats are done. Better yet, he’ll teach you how to use the strongmen’s methods to take your own training to levels you hadn’t imagined. Click for more information on Dave Whitley’s Strongman DVD.

You’ll be blown away by the variety possible using this simple movement. Click for more information on Tracy Reifkind’s Programming the Kettlebell Swing DVD.

90 minutes of new training ideas!

This is part four of Dan’s IronOnline workshop, the final DVD of the series, in which he shows us his sample warm-ups, a few workout varieties, and his famous barbell complexes. Trust me, these aren’t your regular Bomber bodypart splits, although over the decades Dave’s done his share of barbell rows, presses and dumbbell farmer walks, and he’s probably also done our share.

One of Dan’s key phrases here was, “The warm-up is the workout,” and as he puts our crew through the paces, you’ll see how he can make that claim! He also uses members of the audience to demonstrate new movements, or to show his corrections when we went astray.

Here he uses Elke to show, as he tells the story and gives guidance on Koji squats, which I’m assuming you haven’t seen before.

Dan shows his daily favorites:
Gait Warm-up
Goblet Squat & Bootstrapper Squat
Hip Flexor Stretch & RDL Stretch
Plank Series
Horizontal Shrugs
Maxercist and Parked Rows
Crocodile Pushups
Heartbeat Squat
Kalos Sthenos Getup
Ab Circuit
Star Plank
Barbell Complexes
A full warm-up series
Sample workouts, insights and more

Includes pdf handouts of the sample workouts, warmups and barbell complexes

And in this clip, Dan’s pal Josh Vert performs the deadbug series, again with Dan at the controls.

This is a DVD you’ll watch over and over for new training ideas — from a variety in the warm-up, to quick-moving barbell complexes to several ways to make your workouts more interesting, with a selection of exercises you’ve never seen, Dan puts it all together to get you moving.

In part three of the four DVDs from the Utah workshop weekend, we get a taste of Dan John’s instruction for beginning Olympic weightlifting.

Our original idea was this would be primarily for adults who’ve never lifted Olympic-style, and it’s certainly that, however one of the attendees is a competitive Olympic lifter, who told me a couple of Dan’s tips changed her lifting forever. I’m now thinking anyone interested in Olympic lifting will get something out of this one.

I pulled a couple of clips from the dvd to give you a taste of what went on during our time with Dan. First, let’s look at his take on pulling through the heels.

In this 80-minute DVD, Dan taught:

Olympic lifting overview

Snatch positions

Push jerk

Split jerk

The Jerk

Overhead squat

Goblet squat

Shoulder mobility

Putting weights overhead

Hamstring lengthening

Romanian deadlift stretch

Wrist flexibility

Now here’s one of value to everyone, even those without interest specifically in Olympic lifting: How to get wrist flexibility.

Three cameras captured this one-time event for the history books — this is a video you’ll watch again and again!

Two muscular slide shows are included on the DVD, plus a 32-page booklet of a subsequent private conversation between Bill and Dave during which they discuss some favorite subjects untouched in the seminar.

From the September 2006 issue of Flex Magazine: A DVD That Delivers

Bill Pearl and Dave Draper erected the pillars of Hercules decades ago, and no one, not even petulant progress and the sport’s modern super celebrities, has been able to go beyond. Who could? Pearl and Draper are the liver and lights of bodybuilding. Their physiques have been envied for more than 40 years, but their wisdom, knowledge, character, passion and principles are what impel us to sit raptly at their feet, keep our mouths shut, and listen eagerly for hours to their every revelation.

Pearl/Draper is a joint seminar the two held at Dave Draper’s Santa Cruz, California, gym, and it’s surely the most compelling and valuable bodybuilding DVD ever. Come, now, what more could you ask? In the midst of a packed house of idolaters, who are literally hanging from the rafters and draped over railings, Pearl and Draper stand bowling-ball shoulder to bowling-ball shoulder, sharing their perspectives on “bodybuilding then and now, revealing truths, expelling myths and offering priceless insights” to all who ask.

So rich and profound is the content that, when the 75-minute DVD ends, one feels he’s lived a lifetime with these legends. No one, or 20, could have done it better, and the exclamation point to it all comes when revivified Ed Corney joins them from the audience.

Included as liner notes is a 32-page booklet of a separate private conversion between Pearl and Draper at Pearl’s sprawling penetrale in Oregon. Priceless, all of it. ~Julian Schmidt, Flex Magazine
